Project Overview

Kazakhstan is the largest steel producer in Central Asia. In response to the ” Nurly” initiative… Under Zhol ‘s “New Economic Policy,” the country’s largest steel conglomerate urgently needed to upgrade its aging Soviet-style power system to support two newly built high-power electric arc furnace (EAF) production lines for producing steel for high-speed rail tracks. KeRun Intelligent Control Co., Ltd., leveraging its extensive technical expertise and price advantage in high-current special transformers , became the core power equipment supplier for the project, injecting Chinese power into the industrial heart of Central Asia.

Project Description and Supply Scope

This is a typical 110kV terminal step-down substation. Our supply includes more than just individual equipment; it forms the “heart” and “arteries” of the substation:

  • Core Transformer (Heart):
    2 units of 110kV/20kV 63MVA oil-immersed dual-winding power transformers.

    • Logic: The “two-use, one-backup” or parallel running mode ensures redundancy. The 63MVA capacity is the standard for 110kV stations, stepping down high voltage to the commonly used 20kV medium voltage in Romania.

  • Complete Equipment (Arteries):
    40 units of KYN28A-24 (24kV) indoor metal-clad withdrawable switchgear.

    • Logic: These are used for energy distribution on the 20kV side, including incoming line cabinets, capacitor reactive power compensation cabinets (to improve power factor), and outgoing line cabinets to supply power to various factories.

  • Station Power and End Distribution (Capillaries):
    4 units of 20kV/0.4kV 1600kVA cast-resin dry-type transformers.

    • Logic: 2 units are used for station power (lighting, air conditioning, control power), while the other 2 units are integrated into European-style box transformers to supply power to office buildings in the industrial park.

    Solution Design Logic and Principles

Why was this design chosen? Our engineering logic is based on “load characteristics” and “power quality”:

    Impact Load Design:
Given the large motors and stamping equipment in the industrial park, load fluctuations are severe. We added vertical capacitor compensation and enhanced the mechanical clamping force on the transformer coils to prevent coil deformation due to frequent short-circuit impacts.

    Harmonic Mitigation:
To address harmonics generated by factory variable frequency drives (VFDs), we integrated passive filter circuit interfaces into the complete switchgear. Additionally, the transformers adopt the D,yn11 connection group to effectively suppress third-order harmonics, ensuring grid purity.

    Redundant Power Supply Logic:
The two main transformers serve as backups for each other. When one is under maintenance, the other automatically assumes the critical load via the 24kV side bus-tie switchgear, ensuring uninterrupted factory operations.

    Romania Market Research and Insights

Before the design, the KeRun team conducted thorough research on Romania’s local conditions:

    • Voltage Level Transformation:
Romania is gradually phasing out the old 6kV/10kV distribution grid and transitioning to the 20kV standard, as recommended by the EU. Our equipment is designed with an insulation level of 24kV (highest system voltage), not the domestic 10kV standard, which is a key technical point.

    • Special Oil Conservancy Requirements:
Research revealed that Romania has high requirements for transformer oil protection. We abandoned the traditional open design and adopted capsule-type oil tanks (MDT) that completely isolate the oil from the air to prevent aging, aligning with the local preference for long-lifetime equipment.

    • Seismic and Wind Load Considerations:
Based on local wind conditions, we reinforced the heat exchangers on the outdoor main transformers to withstand wind speeds up to 30m/s.

    Standards and Technical Requirements Insights

We understand the market barriers when entering Romania:

    • EN 50588-1 (EU Ecodesign Directive):
This is a hard requirement. Our transformer no-load loss (Po) and load loss (Pk) meet Tier 2 (2021) stage standards. Many non-EU products fail to meet this requirement, but KeRun surpasses the standard by 5%.

    • CE Certification and LVD Directive:
All complete switchgear and dry-type transformers have been CE certified under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive, with full Technical Construction Files (TCF) provided.

    Product Advantages and Selling Points

    • Custom Compact Design:
For Romania’s substation retrofit projects with limited foundation space, we optimized the transformer oil tank structure. The footprint is 15% smaller than comparable European products, eliminating the need for clients to expand the foundation.

    • Low Leakage Commitment:
We use a double-sealed groove structure and low-temperature-resistant acrylic seal gaskets to solve the common issue of “oil leakage” in transformers. This design is suitable for Romania’s stringent environmental monitoring conditions.

    • Full-Link Integrated Testing:
The transformers and switchgear are jointly tested (factory acceptance testing) before shipment. This ensures matching protection settings. After installation, customers can energize the system immediately, reducing on-site commissioning time by 50%.

    Transformer Procurement Considerations (Business Terms)

Given the risks in cross-border heavy equipment trade, we enforce strict financial discipline:

    • Trade Terms: EXW (Ex-Works) or FOB (Free On Board at Chinese Port).

      • Reason: Transformers are oversized and heavy. To avoid uncontrollable risks at the destination port, particularly with Romania’s mountainous roads, we recommend using customer-designated professional logistics companies for shipping and further transport. We handle safe loading onto containers or bulk ships.

    • Strict Payment Terms: 100% payment before shipment (T/T).

      • Reason: Each transformer is customized to Romania’s specific parameters (Unique Specifications) and cannot be resold to other customers. Therefore, we require full payment before the product leaves our control. In return, we provide full transparency during the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), where customers can witness the test results before payment.

    Why Choose KeRun Intelligent Control?

    • Understanding “European Standards” in Chinese Manufacturing:
We don’t just sell products. We understand EN standards and the 20kV grid structure.

    • Fast Delivery Response:
Unlike European manufacturers who often have 12-18 month lead times, KeRun can complete the design and manufacturing of 110kV transformers in 1-3 months. This helps owners connect to the grid and generate power sooner.

    • One-Stop Technology Loop:
With KeRun, you don’t need to separately deal with transformer and switchgear manufacturers. We solve all interface matching issues and provide single-source responsibility for your project.
