Mozambique Containerized Energy Storage Substation Project
Located in northern Mozambique, the project is situated in an area with an extremely unstable power grid, frequently experiencing power outages lasting for weeks due to tropical cyclones. The mining area urgently needs an independent and reliable power source.
- Environmental hell: The average annual temperature is 30°C or higher, the humidity remains above 85% all year round, and it belongs to the world’s high-incidence area of thunderstorms (thunderstorm days > 80 days/year).
- Isolated Operation: This is a 100% off-grid system. If the transformer fails, the entire mining area will be paralyzed, resulting in extremely high losses from production stoppages.
- Load impact: When crushers and ball mills in mines start up, they generate impact loads of up to 3 times the rated current, which is a great test of the transformer’s impact resistance.
Impact resistance and high overload resistance
- Technical improvements: To address the inrush current during ball mill startup, we increased the mechanical strength of the coil. We adopted self-adhesive transposed conductors (CTC) and increased the clamping force of the core clamps, improving its short-circuit withstand capability by 30%.
- Thermal management: Designed according to K-Factor 13 standards, the transformer can operate continuously for 120 minutes under 1.5 times overload without alarming, ensuring smooth start-up of mining equipment.

Thunderstorm resistance and insulation enhancement

- Technical action: In response to the high thunderstorm density in Mozambique, we increased the high-voltage side lightning impulse withstand voltage (BIL).
- Moisture-proof process: The coil uses H-class insulation material and is treated with VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation). The surface is covered with a special anti-mildew and anti-salt spray coating, so that creepage or mold will not occur even at 95% humidity.

Intelligent temperature control and maintenance-free
- Technical features: Utilizing ONAN (oil-immersed self-cooling) technology, the fan is eliminated (fans are prone to failure in dusty and humid environments). The oil tank employs a corrugated, fully sealed structure, filled with high-purity nitrogen for protection, preventing oxygen and moisture from entering and achieving true “maintenance-free” operation.
